Barry
You have given a very clear and detailed overview which is of great help. Your information has come from a better source than mine, and you live there!
You might have something on Caldwell of that Ilk who was attainted with the Mure as a result of the Chitterflat Incident (part of the Pentland Hills Rising of 1666). I know nothing apart form the name and map locality of Chitterflat. I believe that the Mure family eventually had its estates restored (as you have stated) but the Caldwell who also fled the country may have wound up in the USA. His property was never recovered.
I also believe that cadet branches became involved in the Plantation of Kintyre.
I was born at Kilmarnock but my family left for England then Wales when I was only 6 years old we returned on holidays until my parents migrated to Australia when I was 14.
I read somewhere (source lost) that the Caldwell estate of the Mure family ran into over 17,000 acres in the early 1700's. Somewhere else said that at one time the Mure's were regarded as the richest family in Sotland.
