One of the more popular Protestant Bibles before the King James Version was that of John Wycliffe, first disseminated in the late 1300's (1366? 1371?). I have not succeeded in finding an on-line version. I suspect that its spelling of the word "well" for any source of water welling from the earth would have helped bring about a consensus in the English speaking world among Scots and English how the word would be spelled. It would be delightful if someone could provide us excerpts from that book to illustrate what was the spelling chosen. The same with the word for cold. Messages In This Thread
