Been looking arouns a bit. Seems Freskin's family had some connections down south. A sister married a Douglas and a descendent married the daughter of Colville of Ochiltree.
Much controversy over where Freskin came from - he is variously thought a Pict, a Briton, a Fleming, or just someone who came with the Normans. The Sutherland's and the Murray's are descended from his family (and others also).
I am starting to wonder if the Mure with the accent over the 'e' being the French adjective for "walled enclosure" and posibly pronounced "Moor-eh" or "Mur-eh" is close to the family of "Murray" as the pronunciation would be very similar.
This gets back to my earlier notes on "Walls" Castle-Walls and Walls Hill. If this were the case Mure might be nothing more than the Norman French translation of the existing Anglo-Saxon or British locality name and mean the same thing or even be the same family.
The chronicles say "it is thought" that Gilchrist Mure inherited the lands of Caldwell "through a marriage with a Caldwell heiress". If they didn't know then we can't be sure today - might have just as easily have been the adoption of a French name by the same family. The other Caldwell's who kept their name would have thought that they were "putting on airs".
Haven't studied the Murray family so I am likely to "cop it" over this one.
