Interesting word. in post war Glasgow most houses had a "Wally dug" (dog) on the mantlepiece as in "wally" china clay. But in auld Scots or Lallans, Wally meant big/strong ie in Burns "Address to a Haggis" The lines
"But mark the rustic, Haggis fed, clap in his
"wally nieve" (fist) a blade he'll make it whistle
and legs and arms and heads he'll sned (cut off) like tops o' thristle" David
