When families started getting smaller I think that the naming process was accelerated. I was named Thomas David after both grandfathers. My sister is Celia Mary. Celia was because she was born on or near St Cecilia's day. (No we are not very religious - just that my father liked the name) and the Mary was from Dad's Mother. My brother - last and final got James from his father and Matthew from Dad's youngest brother and best man at the wedding. So the system was breaking down even in that generation.
I hate to say it but George, William and Samuel are "English" names - are you sure that your family was originally Scottish?
The Samuel Caldwell's I found in Australia came from Lancashire. There are a few George's and a bit more William's about in Scotland but I haven't noticed too many Scots Samuels.
