Dean, you have found yet another possibility, if we were Smith's we would be stuck but "Caldwell" seems to have endless possibilities, Someone also once said it was a straight trnslation from benedicte and was something to do with benedictine monks!

Problem is that I don't think the coal mines were in Renfrew to any great extent.
