Cannot remember the Hamilton's ever being any particular friends of the Caldwell's. Duke of Hamilton bought up some of the lands in the area.
Trouble is that the family inter-married enough to be able to claim almost any tartan.
I could lay claim to the Douglas (from Drysdale) and McPhail from my maternal grandmother.
