: How are the Caldwells linked to the Hamiltons?

Several years ago I came across a Heraldy/Tartan sorta guy who was running the shop at the time on the Queen Mary. We'd got to talking about clans, and he'd just sent way to Her Majesty's something of something (can't remember) for another Caldwell.

Anyway, I got to take a look at the document as the Caldwell who ordered it hadn't yet picked it up from the merchant. It showed a clan association to Hamilton, and I took it at its face.

This many years, and much research later, I'm leaning back to Stewart. As I mentioned in another post, after the war in 1745, anyone without a clan affiliation was lumped into Stewart. All indications from as far back as I can yet reach, my line was in America prior to the war in 1745.
