Barbara asks which Andrew married Ann Stewart. Her ancestor, John Caldwell, was the brother of the one who married Ann Stewart. She received some skuttlebutt on the internet that there were two Andrew Caldwells who had been confused with one another. The confusion is understandable. On this website, under "Ancestors Database," sponsor John Caldwell has posted a statement that the parents of Rev. David Caldwell were Andrew Caldwell and Ann Stewart. Nine out of ten genealogical databases and textbooks will say the same thing. There is a widely circulated textbook, by a Mrs. Anderson called Caldwell Workbook, 1966, I believe, available through interlibrary loan from Virgina State public library. It is says the same thing. But these references are mistaken. The wills of the two Andrew Caldwells have been examined in an out-of print book by historian Ethel Stephens Arnett, relating to the Rev. David Caldwell, also available through interlibrary loan. The wills confirm that the father of Rev. David Caldwell was the Scot immigrant Andrew Caldwell who died in 1757, husband of Martha, not the Ulster Irish immigrant, who died in 1752, that had married Ann Stewart. Both Andrews resided in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, along with two other Andrew Caldwells, in most of the first half of the 1700's. Barbara is in luck. The ancestors of the Andrew Caldwell who married Ann Stewart have been traced back several hundred years prior to his birth in 1692 or 1692 and are published online, here and elsewhere. This Andrew Caldwell is an ancestor of John Caldwell Calhoun. I recommend Barbara also search the "Caldwell Links" at this webwiste that will lead her to the Randy webpage. Barbara might get more help by contacting the Lancaster County Historical Society. There have been several journal issues referring to the Andrew Caldwell who married Ann Stewart.
