: At another entry, Barbara has mentioned a book by Levy
: that refers to a runaway slave about to be whipped by
: the Rev. Caldwell. I would be most appreciative if she
: would quote or scan the relevant passage and send it
: to me or post it on this website.
THE BOOK IS BY LEVI COFFIN (and I think you have already mentioned that book yourself)I am leaving for San Antonio for a weeks vacation but upon my return, I will gladly share the information I have! I have not learned how to use a scanner yet....but I can give you page numbers and other information...even zerox and mail to you what I have..if you want me to mail it to you just answer this with your address and I will mail it when I return. If you have the book, it is a story about an escaped slave, a woman with a baby, who was about to be separated from her family and she did not want that to happen. At the time, Levi Coffin was only 15 or so in age. He did in fact meet runaways in an area back of the Caldwell farm and his dad's farm to offer them food or news of the underground railroad. He took the woman to his home and they kept her overnight because her baby was very, very ill, not expected to make it through...they devised the plan that Levi would take her home to Dr. Caldwells (if indeed it is Dr. Caldwell he is speaking of) and plead for her to remain with the Caldwell farm and NOT be punished. There is an interesting conversation between Levi and the Doctor which does indeed show that the Dr. was a respected gentleman.
Again, if you do not have the book, I will make whatever arrangements I can to send you what I have copied off........no problem and glad to be of help!
