Quaker Minister Levi Coffin actually wrote that Ede was to be sent along with her baby to Samuel Caldwell, leaving behind her other children and husband. No where in Rev. Levi Coffin's book is any explicit mention made of the Rev. Caldwell being Ede's master. This ambiguity was previously mentioned here by Barbara Randolph. All of Coffin's reminiscences are uncorroborated. The witnesses and participants to these events were long dead when Coffin wrote his memoirs. Coffin's book implies that Rev. David Caldwell, through his employees, indirectly supported the underground. But Coffin never went so far as to credit Rev. Caldwell with being a sponsor or more active participant in the underground railroad. Coffin never mentions the efforts of the Presbyterian Church relating to Bible schools in the slave states but acknowledges that Presbyterian ministers as renowned as Rev. David Caldwell were strongly opposed by less lenient slave owners. Messages In This Thread
