David Caldwell made effective use of limited opportunities for assertive action in NC. Coffin had moved to Indiana, a free state that shielded him; Rev. Caldwell remained in a slave state that imposed the death penalty on harbingers of fugitive slaves. When Coffin lived in NC, his behavior fairly paralleled that of Rev. Caldwell.
