I am probably responsible for setting off at a tangent. I was born in Scotland and now live in Australia. I know very little about "Stateside" Caldwell's just as much as "Stateside" Caldwell's seem to know very little about the country from where the family came. There are two basic threads in any genealogical quest:
1) chasing the threads of ones own ancestors - and you are bound to hit the inevitable balnk wall as soon as you go overseas.
2) the family history of itself - with no specific connection ones own family - but by looking at the greater picture you might just happen upon a connection that is useful.
As I am not much use in respect of "Stateside" I have been pushing option "2" - an area in which I might be of some use.
From what I can see the US connection is so huge that it is verging upon impossibility.
People that post mesages looking for so and so from such and such county will probably be just as successful as I have been looking for the descendents of Allan Caldwell and Janet Guthrie who were residing at St Quivox in Ayshire before 1800 (ziltch). Many of their descendents have emigrated but no one seem to have been able to come up with a connection that spans the Atlantic Ocean.
The questioning type of post will elicit some helpful response as we all like to help. More useful is when one posts up information that you have found and would like to share - that is helping everyone and allows some friendly debate upon its rights and wrongs.
I really appreciate your interest but the "Stateside" research will have to come for those "Stateside" - there are a few good contributers to the site who are generously passing on information that has obviously been the work of their diligent research.
This is one big happy co-operative and the volume of material on it is going to be proportional to the efforts of those interested enough to contribute the fruits of their efforts - roll on more "Stateside" research.
