The highest point in "Caldwell Contry" is known as "Walls Hill" and the site of an Iron Age Fort. Mur is French for "wall" and Mure its adjective. The Wallace, Mure and Caldwell families seem to originate from identical areas in Renfrew and Ayrshire through a Kilmarnock/Riccarton to St Quivox/Prestwick axis.

Caldwell is pronounced Caerwall or Kerwahl (spelled Carwall) by country folk (not by Caldwell's though) - my Scottish relations say that it is just a nickname. The family has clung very closely to its current spelling and pronunciation through the ages even though it is hard to say with a Scottish accent!
