Venutius waged war against the Romans and there were a number of great battles in the north. He was finally defeated in 71 AD in a great battle at Scotch Corner three miles from Richmond.
A massive Iron Age encampment at Stanwick about 7 miles to the north of Richmond was excavated by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1951/52. The fortifications amongst the larges in the country run for approximately 5 miles (8 kilometres) and encompass an area of 700 acres (290 ha). Built in the first century the settlement was closely liked with the last chapter of the Brigante's turbulent history. Stanwicjk is identified with Venutius and developed as a centre of political power as well as one of economic properity. the massive earthwork defences are an obvious manifestation of this.
