Just as a teaser - I have seen references in the US to a Caldwell crest with a Roe Buck on it. It is interesting to note that the Roe Burn runs into the Barr Loch near Beith in North Ayrshire. Caldwell's are recorded as being on farms in the district principally "Park", "Barfod", "Yardfoot" and "Knowes". Other recorded properties such as "Gavin", "Risk", "Belltrees", "Lochside" and "Muirend" are further north opposite Lochwinnoch.
The Roe Burn starts in the hills of Caldwell Country and now feeds Barcraigs reservoir.
To the East of the reservoir is a tower formerly known as "The Hall of Little Caldwell". Further east still near the ex-Mure family residence known as "Caldwell" is another tower plainly known as the "Caldwell Tower".
The Caldwell House ex-residence of the Mure family is now a psychiatric hospital.
There is no "village of Caldwell" (in Scotland) and the closest village is the village of Lugton just to the south of Caldwell House. "Caldwell House" has had little or nothing to do with the Caldwell family directly since the 1300's!
This is similar in respects to the fact that in a similar area and at roughly a similar time the Montgomeries inherited Eglinton from the Eglinton family through an heiress becoming Montgomery of Eglinton and yet the Eglinton family continues in its own right to this day.
