CaldwellGenealogy.com Discussion ForumMerchant in Ennis Killen WHERE IS THAT?

Date: 12:31 4/19/02 Ok guys, I need your help with both a GEOGRAPHY QUESTION AND A SOCIAL HISTORY QUESTION. According to some notes I have, William Caldwell of Straeton, Ayshire had sons Joseph, David and John (source: Belfast Times 1858 ? by R. M Sibert, History of Ireland-Caldwell's). William's son John appeared early in the parish of Ennis Killen, Fermaugh and Londonderry. QUESTION: Where are these areas located? John Caldwell became prominent as a MERCHANT in Ennis where he died in 1639-Will proved 1640; m. 1627 to Mary Sweetenham. Issue-Baptisms Derry Cathedral. QUESTION: What would be a TYPICAL OR POSSIBLE MERCHANT IN ENNIS? What would that area (Ennis) be known for that might have led to someone being a "merchant"???? I have no idea of the social history of these areas to have a concept of what the word "merchant" might have refered to. I hope I have stated my questions in such a way as to illicit help from someone and that this is not idle chatter to some of you! Would Ennis Killen have been the name of the town and Fermaugh like a county or parish? Barbara Messages In This Thread
