Re: Merchant in Ennis Killen WHERE IS THAT?

In Response To: Merchant in Ennis Killen WHERE IS THAT? (Barbara Randolph)

Hi Barbara
Enniskillen is a town strategically placed at the Western end of Lough Earne and Belleek is at the other end. Castle Caldwell belonged to the Blennerhassett family who were (very) badly treated in an Irish uprising (recorded in ghastly detail). They gave up and one of the Caldwell's acquired the property cheap. The family seems to have been one of adventurers and opportunists who enriched themselves at native Irish expense. They seem to have been much more benevolent later on.
The family were traders and carried finished goods from Dublin and transhipped them at Eniskillen to boat them down Loch Earne to Belleek and beyond to the Atlantic coast. Irish exports went the other way.
I cannot recommen John Cunningham's book "The Caldwells of Castle Caldwell"too highly for anyone wishing to study this family in detail.
Tom
