: I had not realized there were so many coats of arms
: linked to Caldwell lineages. I was hoping that
: you might be able to tell me a bit more about the
: families with whom these coat of arms are linked, and
: when these coat of arms were first issued.
Victor I did not suggest that these were coats of arms but crests which are used in seals.I will try and tract the families of these "crests " for you. The coat of arms predating the 1600s would be free of
the
: taint that they were sold by King James VI during his
: reign (about 1603-1625) to prosperous merchants
: willing to pay coin simply for the status of being
: designated baronets.
The biggest surprise would come if any of these coats of
: arms were linked to knights. Knighthood was closely
: linked to Norman ancestry. By and large the Caldwells
: lack any link to Norman ancestry. There is, of course,
: mention of three Caldwell brothers and their father
: from near Toulon, said by some to be in France but in
: actuality then part of the Holy Roman Empire, possibly
: linked as knights to the Crusades, Inquisitions, or
: jihads, or alternatively, as refugees from such
: endeavors. It was Voltaire, I believe, who said it was
: neither holy, Roman, nor an empire.
I am sure if you really wished to delve into any of "The Dukes and Earls"of Britain or Ireland many would not have won their title by the sword. When Essex was in Ireland during the O'neill War he Knighted 31 men,Queen Elizabeth even had the Duke of Anjou Knight Sir Francis Drake and incidently France was not part of the Holy Roman Empire.Voltaire was right. The Holy Roman Empire is the name given to the territory which was ruled by German Kings between 962-1806,Otto the First was the first emperor in 962AD,the greatest phase was the union of Germany and Italy except for the two Scilies, however by the 1200,s the empire had lost control of much of Germany and Italy but German kings continued to use the title. In 1273 Rudolf of Hapsburg became emperor and that family retained the title and they becme the Austro-Hungarian empire. It was this family that made Sir James Caldwell Bart Count of Milan. The Empress giving him a ring of their family crest of her finger.Bart is Baronet. I am uncertain whether the title "Sir" was
: conferred only on knights, or whether it also extended
: to baronets. I have seen reference to a Sir James
: (John?) Caldwell, owner of Castle Caldwell, Co.
: Fermanagh, Ireland. Was knighthood conferred on him?
: Or was he a baronet?
A baronet is a hereditery title, sir being added to your name, however one can be knighted but the knighthood dies with you.
: That is a question that I bet you know the answer to. You
: seem to be very knowledgeable about the Caldwells of
: North Ireland -- especially those of Co Fermanagh --
: more so than any other contrbutor to this website.
: For each officially registered coat of arms in Scotland,
: the Lyons Register in Edinburgh would have records
: that could answer these questions. I do not know what
: entity registers the British and Irish caldwell coats
: of arms.
The book I found this in was in Proni I believe the title was British Family Crests.I will let you know on monday the precise title, printers etc.I wonder if someone out there could recommend were I could get a copy of the Caldwell's of Castlecaldwell as I cannot track any of the people suggested and no one in the libraries seem to know of it.
: Let me offer some constructive criticism. What you write
: would be of far greater value to everyone if you more
: often cited the references upon which you base your
: statements. When I add research ie births deaths marriages wills etc I thought I gave my sources. However I find a considerable amount of trees tracing their roots to Ireland seem to be obsessing on one family"The Caldwells of CastleCaldwell other than the numerous Caldwells who settled at the same time.I would advice that genealogists took a serious look at the Muster Rolls, the Hearth money Rollsand estate records in the search for their ancestors.
I do not like to be seen as bursting someones bubble but the tenuous links to Castlecaldwell are as poorly researched as the "Myth of the Toulon brothers"
