I don't know who matriculated the commonly recognised Scottish Caldwell Coat of Arms. That is an interesting point. Mrs Gordon seemed to indicate that it was "Caldwell of that Ilk" or the "Gudeman of Caldwell" and she was referring to the Caldwell's of Little Caldwell. She states that this line died out.
If this is the case the next most prominent of the family in the area seem to have been the family holding the property of Lochside although the family at Belltress nearby must also have been fairly influential.
The Sempill family also has claim to Belltrees and I am not sure that the Caldwell's might not just have been tenants of the Sempills.
There is a famous and very large property on the Hunter River Australia just west of Newcastle which was originally selected and developed by a Sempill who named it "Belltrees". When I found out that his middle initial was "C" I almost got excited until I found out that it stood for "Campbell" :-(
