You might begin by searching http://www. rootsweb. com/~ vapittsy/. It is a genealogy page for Pittsylvania County, Virginia. Generally I do not like the type of inquiry that you posted. But I thought maybe I might be helpful if I checked the internet to see what sources were available. I began with the key words, Pittsylvania County Virginia. There were numerous sources and I just listed for you the first I saw. My first criticism is that you have not stated what genealogical sources you have already checked and found insufficient. This makes it more difficult for anyone to identify a lead that you have not already tried. Secondly, you have not employed a search strategy that is likely to provide any yield. On the average an inquiry like yours receives about 20 hits before it disappears from this web page. The likelihood that any of those 20 visitors would know anything about your ancestor is virtually zero. Your chances would be far greater of a helpful response if you asked what genealogical sources relating to 18th and 19th century Virginia has anyone found to be helpful. Local librarians in Virginia may know of genealogical references and the internet lists many. If you look at similar inquiries at this web site or other genealogical websites you will find it is an exception when anyone responds. You might have better luck making random phone calls or writing to genealogy societies or Caldwells listed in Virginia telephone directories, because it is the Caldwells of that state that are far more likely to have kinship or know of sources from which can be derived the information you seek. Here, your audience includes Caldwells worldwide and perhaps rarely anyone from Virginia. A third criticism is that you have not encouraged anyone's interest in your inquiry to the degree that you are capable. Your inquiry would be more appealing if you told us something about these people. Were they pillars of society or lay-about drunks? Clean shaven or bearded? Sunday regulars or holiday Christians? Flag waving 4th of July celebrants or critics of flag waving idolatry? To what congregation would they have likely belonged? What do you know about the typical inhabitant of the county within which they lived. Why not tell us more, along the lines I suggest. I bet you can offer something that will ring the bell and grab everyone's attention. Messages In This Thread
