In Response To: Re: caldwell coat of arms (Plunkett Caldwell)

: The Caldwell family crest as opposed to "A Coat of
: Arms".
: The English crest of which there are ;

: 1)A cockshead between wings expanded combed and
: wattled. In the beak a cross formee fitched.

: 2)A cockshead winged sa crests,in beak a cross pattee
: fitched

The cross pattee fitche is also known as the "Cross de Maltho Caldwell". The fitchee represents a sharpening to drive he cross into the ground. The Maltese Cross is a reference to the crusades. I have seen claims that the Caldwell's were involved in the crusades but other than the allusion contained in the coat of arms I have nothing concrete.

: 3)Half demi-lion grasping a broken simitar

: 4)A demi-cock rising
: The cock is the emblem of vigilance represented as a cock
: crowing or cockshead.Formee or pattee is spreading
: like dovetails at each extremity.Fitched is sharpened
: to a point.
: ie;cocks combs spreading to a point might appear as
: church steeples.

: The Irish crest of Caldwell(bart)

: A ducal coronet,a sceptre entwined with two serpents vert
: between wings.
: Vert, green engraved by virtical lines.

: The Scottish crest,

: A fountain throwing up water.

A fountain is a rare crest and is supposed to be the representation that someone has achieved his aims in life.
The fountain is also an armorial bearing usually represented in the round on the shield which is supposed to represent a spring, or water generally. The Scots shield does not have the roundule but water is represented by "waves". It is strange that they are green and red if they are supposed to be representing water.

I have already mentioned St Chad's Well at Litchfield Cathedral and the Cathedral's three equal sized spires.

I have also gone through the exercise of thinking of the English cross pattee fitchee as being made up of three "passion nails" overlaid. If you re-arrange these passion nails as hanging from the "chief" you get the three "piles" of the Scottish shield.
Not good enough Tom - but it makes a good yarn!
