Bit over-dramatic Dean - I think the population problems were mainly war and general pestilence (mainly plague). Followed by hard work, cold, dearth and general poor living conditions. [No wonder so many migrated :)] The Northern areas and Scotland were not densely settled anyway (even less so in sheep growing areas).
