My grandfather (William James Smith) was born in Saltcoats on June 28, 1889. His parents were James Caldwell Smith and Martha Lamont. James was born May 2, 1868 in Kilmarnock. His parents were William James Smith and Mary Wilson. William was born in Kilmarnock. I have no documentation to prove it, but his parents are supposed to have been James Smith and Jean (?). Jean could have been a Caldwell.

Mary's parents were Robert Wilson and Caroline Muir. I do not know who the parents were of Robert and Caroline. My grandmother said that the parents of Robert were Andrew Wilson and Mary Caldwell, but I haven't been able to confirm this.

So, at this point, I do not know for sure where the Caldwell name comes into our family line. Does anyone have any connection with the people discussed above? All suggestions will be appreciated.
