: Scotland) one was John (my ancestor) and another was
: Charles. I have found a refernce to Charles (or at
: least to a son of Charles by the same name) He was
: listed in the 1851 census (aged 38 born at St Quivox)
: with his wife Elizabeth (aged 36 born at Stair)and
: their 6 children. He was listed as a coalminer and
: they were living in a "colliers row" at
: Perceton near Dreghorn.
: As many of the family seem to have emigrated from
: Scotland it might be a clue for someone to "hook

I have worked out the dates of birth approximately from the ages given and the year of census (1851)
I have also show the Scots family naming convention which seems to have been followed.
Following the convention this Charles is unlikely to have been the son of Charles (1787) as the first son should have been named Charles also. I think it is more likely he was a younger son of the second Alan (1780) who may well also have married a Janet.
Charles was obviously a family name even though it seems to have been more unusual in the Caldwell family generally and did not continue in our family line.
I note that I have come across a couple of people descended from Charles Caldwell's originating in the Eastern Provinces of Canada.
I know that this Charles had a cousin Alan Caldwell (also a coalminer) m Janet Hunter who emigrated to Cape Breton about 1832 with his three children.
Two of the sons of John Caldwell (my ancestor mentioned above) emigrated to Australia Matthew's family in 1884 and John's ?date?.
There is every prospect that some of Charles' children also emigrated in the decline of the coal industry in Scotland.
