: This is said to be the grandfather of Joseph Caldwell who married Jane McGrew.
"Caldwell" compiled by Mrs. John Q. Anderson, dated December, 1959, p. 25 states "George Caldwell, b. 1689 m. Jane Phillips and came to America."

BIRTH-DEATH: Info from Willis Finley 3 April 1995

In "Descendents of Daniel Martin" by Gee, it is suggested that George died in Ireland and his widow remarried to Thomas Dougherty and left Ireland landing in America in 1727.

[JAC - I believe this to be George Caldwell, brother of John m. Margaret Phillips. I further believe that Wm. and James are two sons of George m. Jane Phillips]
George bought 405 acres of land in the Beverly Patent for 11.1 pounds, on 24 July 1740. A James Caldwell bought 600 acres for 18 pounds. I suspect this to be the son of George. (source: Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom, p. 418.)
A book on Virginia Colonial Militia indicates that Company #4 of the Augusta County Militia was headed by John Christian, capt. and Wm Christian, Lt. In that company were listed Geo Caldwell, Wm Caldwell, Jas Caldwell. In company #5 there was a Robert Caldwell.(source: Virginia Colonial Militia 1651 -1776 ed. W.A. Crozier, pub. The Genealogical Association, NY 1905.)

I picked up your message on the Caldwell message board [Message #70 Sunday, August 29, 1999]. I am keenly interested in George, brother of John Caldwell of Cub Creek. There seem to be two George Caldwells who could be the brother. One died in PA and the other in VA. Here are my notes on George in Virginia research:
Wrote will 27 Dec. 1742; inventory dated 17 Feb. 1743 [Amelia DB 1:23]; estate settlement 9 Aug. 1748 [Amelia WB 1:52]. - [JAC - Augusta County Court Records make reference to George and two sons after 1748, therefore I don't believe that this is George m. Jane Phillips.]
"While Cunningham, Little John, and Parks were able to appear at court and record their deeds on 1 Nov 1742, George Caldwell did not. The following year, Thomas Caldwell recorded the deed for the George Caldwell tract and the land was eventually distributed to the named heirs in the same proportions described by George Caldwell's will. Widow Sarah, sons George, Thomas, and Henry, daus Jane, Marrey (to be schooled), and Agnes." [Pat's comments] - [JAC - References throughout the Augusta County Court Records indicate George as having two sons. This particular George shows three sons. George Caldwell m. Jane Phillips - this shows m. Sarah. Therefore, I do not believe this to be brother of "Cub Creek" John Caldwell]
Is this George the brother of John Caldwell settler of Cub Creek@f0 John was b. 1683, and would have been 60 in 1743. Previous secondary information gives John's brother George b. 1690, and wife Jane Phillips; and that he died in Ireland. George b. 1690 would be 52 in 1743. The George who died in Amelia County, provides for the schooling of a daughter, Mary. Could be but need more proof. - [JAC - George who died in Amelia County appears to be George m. Sarah]
"Caldwell" compiled by Mrs. John Q. Anderson, dated December, 1959, p. 25 states "George Caldwell, b. 1689 m. Jane Phillips and came to America."
Sarah married (2) William Boyd. From "Court Order Book 2, Amelia County, Va., 1746-1751," by Gibson Jefferson McConnaughey (Athens, Ga.: Iberian Publishing Co., 1997), p. 101: "Petition, Thomas Caldwell, William Boyd and Sarah his wife, late Sarah Caldwell, exec. of George Caldwell, summoned to give Thomas Caldwell counter security or deliver up testator's estate. (p. 110-B) William Boyd entered into security with James Alexander." - [JAC - Same comments as before RE: George m. Sarah]
"Petition, Sarah Boyd, late widow and relict of George Caldwell, requested that the part of estate not devised in George Caldwell's will be continued in her hands, as exex. Court was divided, so petition continued until a fuller court."
FamilySearch.com, as of 10/15/2000, IGI contained six George Caldwells born in Lifford, Ballycogan, Donegal, Ireland with dates ranging from 1688 to 1691. Two very specific dates were given -- 9 Sep 1688 and 16 Jan 1691. All were secondary sources.
George Caldwell, son of Joseph Caldwell and Jane McGhie, was born 1690, married Jane Phillips, a sister to Margaret Phillips, and came to America, date not known. If he traveled with his wife's sister and his brother, then he came to America 12/10/1727 living at first in New Castle Deleware, then to Chestnut Level in Lancater Co. Pa. and by 1740 in Cub Creek, Va. I would think George was at the age to fight in the French/Indian War. Have you tried the military records@f1 - [JAC - As noted above, George Caldwell, William Caldwell, and James Caldwell were members of Company #4 of the Augusta County Militia.]
