This
series began after Plunkett Caldwell from Northern Ireland put
forth questions that I hadn't taken into consideration regarding
Caldwells in Ireland.
In
dispelling some of the Caldwell myths we find that the first record
of the name Caldwell was found in Renfrewshire in Scotland where
they were seated from very ancient times. Caldwell legend from
Paisley, Scotland, suggests that we were of Norse origin and taken
prisoner at the Battle of Largs, Scotland in 1263.
So,
how did Caldwells end up in Ireland? We know from research that
Caldwells settled in Northern Ireland in the early 1600s from
where, generations later, they would migrate to America.
This
series of stories will examine how Caldwell may have come to settle
in the Ulster region and other areas of Northern Ireland. I feel
that it is important to look beyond dry dates of ancestors and
to put the possibilities of what may have happened into the context
of the times surrounding those dates.
On
first glance, and after considerable research of the subjects,
I think that these stories and others like them may have been
blended together from several pages to a few paragraphs to become
what I like to refer to as the "Caldwell Myths".
This
is turning out to be a very large project as each area researched
brings out tangents and other relevant information that shows
the context of the time more clearly.
