MRS. PETTIGRES DIES IN COLORADO CRASH.
Mrs. Sylvia Caldwell Pettigrew, 68, wife of C. Benton Pettigrew of 360 North Marion street, was fatally injured in a three-car crash at 11:30 a.m. Monday (May 2nd) near Hugo, Colorado.
Mr. and Mrs. Pettigrew were returning from a winter in California when, blinded by a dust storm, Mr. Pettigrew drove into two cars that had been wrecked earlier.
Mrs. Pettigrew failed to regain consciouesness. Mr. Pettigrew has chest and knee injuries and is being cared for at Hugo hospital. His injuries are said not to be critical.
One of their sons, Beryl Pettigrew, music supervisor in the Ottumwa schools, left Des Moines by air early today to be with his father and assist in their return. They had been residents of Ottumwa since 1939. Mrs. Pettigrew was an active member of the First Presbyterian church in Ottumwa.
Mr. and Mrs. Pettigrew had spent the winter in Los Angeles with his mother. They had attended the wedding of their daughter, Mrs. Byrd, on April 4, and had visited the family of their son, Lewis B., at Colorado Springs while en route home. Funeral services were held Friday, May 6, 1955 at 2:00 p.m. at the Fisrt Presbyterian church, by Rev. Harold J. Drown. Burial in Ottumwa, Ia. cemetery.
