In a letter written from Copeland, Kansas to Lucille Stotts dated 14 April 1936, Myrtie stated that they still have the land that they took as a claim when they went to Kansas, thirty-one years before (1905).

She stayed with her grandmother and went to school in Lewisburg, Iowa.
