Martha Jane came to Midland with her parents (George and Melinda Jane (Caldwell) Kennedy) in November 1880, and in 1881 the forest fires burned all of their household goods but one load. So had to start all over again. Her father had bought a forty acre piece of land and built on it, but had bad luck and his horses died so he lost the place. He was a blacksmith and steel fitter. Worked in Ohio and Pennsylvania for the men in the stone quarries and on the railroads, he filed their steel tools. Worked for Wanzor Holcomb for 14 summers. Hr mother Malinda Jane was 84 years old and her father George Kennedy was 70 years old when they died. When Martha was five years old her grandmother Barbry (Simons) Caldwell came to visit them and had Olive Chadwick with her (Olive was Betsy Caldwell Chadwicks daughter) and Barbry's granddaughter. When she was 6 years old her grandmother Barbry died, and she remembers my [LLC] grandfather Nicholas Caldwell bringing his mothers body back to Ohio to Aunt Susan (Caldwell) Philes home, funeral held there.
