I am hoping to learn more about my Scottish ancestry. My great great grandfather William James Caldwell was born 1841 in Cape Town, South Africa and he married Mary Ann Jane Baker in 1877. His parents immigrated from Renfrew Scotland to South Africa sometime between 1820 or 1840 and I wish to know more about them. William James Caldwell had 12 children. One of his sons were Lawrence Edwin Warren Caldwell (my great grandfather) and he had a son named Bert Lawrence Caldwell (my grandfather) and he then had a son which is my father Gerald Caldwell.

This site is excellent. Thank you for your hard work. I am researching Margaret Caldwell of Ayr, Ayrshire. I believe she is my 6th great grandmother. Her father, John, witnessed my 6th great grandfather's baptism. His name was Alexander McCulloch. He married a woman named Alexander. Clearly his father, Thomas, and John Caldwell were close. Each were burgess merchants and baptized their children in the same church (St. John the Baptist Church, Ayr). My line passed through Lancaster County, where other Caldwells apparently moved to also. I will spend more time on this site. Also, I would be grateful for any insights about John Caldwell from Ayr who married Jean Rodger (apparently from Kilmarnock).
I found a framed ( in glass) plate with a note:" This plate was given by Willis Caldwell to Dicey Mann Caldwell in 1830. He carried it on horseback to her."
I assist families of the deceased learn about what they find in attics, etc. This piece is called" Blue Acropolis".Is there a family member who would like it?

Through the Family Search.org database, I trace lineage to a Sir James Caldwell, IV 4th Baronet

Is this webpage for this line of Caldwells?

Hi ~ Matthew's daughter Lucinda (Ellen Howell) is my GG grandmother. She was born in 1845, married John Howell in 1863 in Marion Co IL. They moved to Wayne Co MO. I'm descended through her daughter, Sara Belle Dora Howell.
I'm looking for a will of Matthew's or other legal proof of lineage that Lucinda is his daughter. Thank you for this lovely enjoyable website!

I'm trying to figure out if this is the same Caulwel (Caldwell) family in my tree.
My 12th GGM was Marguerite Caulwel who married into the Veeder family. Their son Foulque Feder Veeder (1550-1632) was my 11th GGF. 4 generations later the Veeder family married into the Van Antwerp family in NY.
I believe Marguerite's was the daughter of Sir Jean Caulwel who was the son of Lord Jacques Caldwell II (1473-1531).
Does this sound right at all? Thank you.

I have traced my Caldwell tree all the way back to John Caldwell III Ballyoggan, Donegal Ireland born 1630. Would love to follow it back further, if possible.
I was a Caldwell family researcher for a number of years. Even had a Caldwell website that was doing quite well. Then we were out of the country for a couple of years and the web host where we had our information (geocities) went defunct while we were away. But I had always (and somewhat stubbornly) adhered to the idea that all of the wonderful Caldwells out there came from the same origins. I really wanted us all to be related! Newer research, however (such as the extensive work posted here), pretty strongly suggests otherwise. In addition, I have had my DNA tested and have never been matched to some of the other Caldwell lines which can be found on various web sites. One in particular (i.e. John Caldwell and Margaret Phillips) was one I had hoped to connect with at some point. That line has extensive history posted and traces further back than my line, which dead ends in Ireland in 1749. So, I must reluctantly accept that it is likely that we do not all come from the same origin (though I would still claim all of you as family, just because!).
I am a direct descendant of the Caldwells of County Fermanagh (1st to 5th baronet). In fact I am possibly the senior surviving male heir. My father had a gold signet ring with the family and was told on many occasions that he was "the last of the Caldwell" line, though I could never find out what this line was. My father was the son of a publican in Barrow and descendant of William Caldwell, who moved to Barrow-in-Furness in the late 19th century. I'm afraid that I never took his claims to aristocratic significance very seriously. But it does appear that I am descended directly from this family.
Several of the younger sons of the Caldwell baronets (a branch of the Renfrewshire family) married their sons to east coast families. This is probably the origin of Joseph Caldwell (1773 – 1835). I have recently retired (I am an academic and Fellow of the Royal Historical Society) and am just getting started on this. I cannot find anything on this site on the Caldwells of Fermanagh.
If anyone has any information on this family, or their links to the family, I would be pleased to hear. I am also happy to share any research I do on them.
Yours cordially,
Ian Aldridge Caldwell (b.1950)

Came across that Rebecca Caldwell is my 8th Grandmother and her daughter, Lucy, married Amos Richardson. Does the reunion Rebecca wanted still occur at the family cemetery?
I am a descendent of Eunice Caldwell, who married Charles Wright.
looking for information for Alexander Caldwell (b abt 1750) who married Ester Rush.
We have the Deed with Robert Caldwell selling land that was given to him by his father Alexander Caldwell. We have the Luke Bible, that was William's with Robert John and William's births. Can we assume that they were brothers? If so no name of Alexander is in the bible. I have the will of Robert Rush naming Ester Rush and husband Alexander Caldwell. But nothing else!
any help would be a treasure! email

I registered for this site but I never received a conformation email. My hope is an administrator will be able to solve the issue.
I have a Caldwell I am searching for and I am hoping this site will help me gather information.
My fourth Great Grand father was :
William Caldwell
1773–1840
BIRTH 10 AUG 1773 • Berkeley, James City, Virginia Colony, BRITISH COLONIAL AMERICA
DEATH 26 APR 1840 • Pendleton, Kentucky, United States
William marries in 1799 Elizabeth Gosney in Ohio county Virginia .
I am looking for his father Alexander Caldwell
Looking to prove that Alexander was his father, and if Alexander was his father can I tie him to military service in Penn? To the Caldwells mentioned in the American revolutionary solders of Franklin county Penn, where it says Robert Rush ( Indian captive) one being Hester rush wife of Alexander Caldwell in the year 1768.
Mr. E.E. Barton papers show and Alexander and Hester Caldwell in 3 Berkeley county West Virginia Deed books involving land purchase and sale. There was a bible that William Caldwell owned and on the front page it says John Caldwell under his name its says:
Robert Caldwell was born 11th day of November 1762
John was born April 17 1770
William was born August 10th 1773 died April 26 1840
William married Elizabeth Gosney March 26 1799.
It goes on to list Williams son and Elizabeth's birth and death
I have not be able to determine if in fact an Alexander Caldwell was Williams father . I have not found any more documents of Alexander with a Hester Rush/Caldwell in Berkeley County West Va. I don't know if they came from Ireland or Scotland. Any information would be a treasure.
thank you ,

Regarding my post of earlier today regarding Paul Caldwell and wife Catherine Thumm, records suggest that Paul's father and grandfather are William Thomas Caldwell, b 1762, and Robert Caldwell Sr., b 1732. However not all records I have looked at - Ancestry, MyHeritage, ... are consistent.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Great source of information. Thanks to all.
I have Caldwells in my ancestry starting with my Maternal Great Grandfather, George J. Caldwell. Family records suggest his ancestry was first Dr. J.C. Caldwell, and second Paul Caldwell, whose wife was a Catherine Thum, the latter two born in 1795.
I cannot find any records on Paul and Catherine. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks, Steve Koch

My father, Lyle Dean Caldwell looked very much like previous descriptions as found if the Caldwell lineage.
He was large in stature, tall, dark skin, beautiful dark eyes, high cheek bones and rolling forehead. Many of the Caldwell traits I find in myself very talkative, generous to a fault though I am fair haired and lighter skin however my older sister is reflection of my father.
I live across the street from the old Caldwell Estate that was built near the Fort and across the street from Fort Scott Founders mansion.
My sister, Rebecca Caldwell now owns the original home that was once owned by Fort Scott founder.
Lyle Dean and Doris K Caldwell, Fort Scott residents had 5 daughters of which three remain all residing in Fort Scott Kansas

I have noticed that a number of people have realised that the Castle Caldwell lines have been added to the Caldwells of Ballybogan, Co. Donegal lines. These are different families. There was no reason for the Enniskillen Caldwells to travel from Fermanagh to Derry to have children baptised. John Caldwell's funeral entry has been documented several times in posts and lists his issue. His second wife remarried and her husband's will is available.
