Obituary of Mary M. Berry Caldwell
Mary M. Berry, eldest child of James L. and Laura M. Berry was born in Humeston, Iowa August 9, 1878. At the age of 13 years she became a member of the Methodist church at Humeston. She graduated from the Humeston high school with the class of 1894 after which she attended the Central Normal University at Humeston, Iowa. In 1896 she was elected to teach seventh and eighth grades in 1918.
On the 31st day of October 1898, she was united in marriage to J.L. Caldwell. After marriage she and Mr. Caldwell lived on the home farm near Lewisburg, Iowa. Here four sons were born. In 1916 they moved to the home of her birth in Humeston. They also lived at Allerton, Iowa before coming to Leon. Mrs. Caldwell was an active member of the Methodist church, Amieita club, Civic club, Harmony club, Rebekas, White Shrine, and past matron of the Order of Eastern Star. She was a charter member of the Woman's Auxiliary of the American Legion at Humeston and later transferred her membership to Leon.
She was preceded in death by one son who died in infancy and Clive Eugene, who died May 2, 1918. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, J.L. Caldwell, one brother, Willis E. Berry of Burlington, and four sisters, Mrs. Maie Kazmerchak of Rawlins, Wyo., Mrs. Dell Roberts of Memphis, Mo., Mrs. Florence Smith of Geneva, Ohio and Mrs. Elva Hughes of Akron, Ohio; two sons, Edward Berry of Davenport and James L. of Moline, Illinios, and one step-son, L.E. of Humeston, three grandsons, Robert E., Donald E., and James L. Caldwell, besides a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Clarence Moore, were held at the Slade Funeral Home October 4, 1943 with internment in the Leon cemetery.
