Signing on again after an absence of some years. I'm always searching for those connected to my great-great grandfather, Robert H. Caldwell, (b. ca 1815 - d. 1876) of County Tyrone. He was a shoemaker and a Presbyterian who married Mary Moore. In the early 1840s, they emigrated to Ontario, Canada, eventually settling in Grey County. One of their daughters, Catherine, married Lyman Smith in Buffalo, where they raised a large family.

Their son, William Robert (b. Co Tyrone 1836 - d. 1883 Durham, Ontario) was my great-grandfather. He served in the 100th Regiment of Foot and was stationed on Malta. He married a Cashel Co. Tipperary woman, Margaret Burke/Birch in Ottawa, 1867. They had 2 sons and 5 daughters.

DNA testing has helped in my research. So far, the only revelation has been a connection to three of the descendants of John Caldwell Calhoun, U.S. Vice-President during pre-Civil War times. We have done the BigY test and are enrolled in the McCarthy South of Ireland group.

Happy researching to all!

Pat

I am trying to fill in the past of my great great grandfather, Matthew Caldwell who emigrated to Philadelphia with his family in 1839. I know he came over on the Caledonia and that he had lived before that in Ireland but I believe he was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Also, several members of his family had the middle name of Huston (including my grandmother) but I can't find any family connection to Hustons. Can anyone give me any information on this?
