Hello Everyone! What a fun site. I\'m a 9x great granddaughter of John Caldwell and Mary Swetenham. My branch comes to America through their great grandson Samuel Caldwell and his son Hugh Caldwell Sr. who left Ireland around 1741/42 (I think...I\'m still trying to find a good citation for that date)and settled in Lancaster and Clearfield counties in Pennsylvania. I started researching my ancestry about a year ago to see if I could debunk a family story that I\'m related to Henry VIII (through a maternal branch that married into the Caldwells) and this site is one of the first I stumbled across. I\'m having so much fun learning about our ancestors and the role they\'ve played throughout history. I found Kings, Queens, Crusaders, Vikings, Visigoths, Archbishops, Knights Templar, Scottish rebels, American Patriots, and Oregon pioneers. We have much to be proud of in our Caldwell heritage!!

Right now I\'m digging into the PA Caldwells and associated families during and immediately after the Revolutionary War. I\'m hitting a brick wall in regards to the family of Jane Boyd who married Hugh Caldwell Jr. in Martic Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1783. Most of what\'s floating around on the internet shows her parents are from Virginia and it just doesn\'t make sense to me. I\'ve spent weeks trying to find a connection between the VA Boyds and the PA Boyds and I just can\'t find anything. If anybody has any information on these families I would really love your help!

Thank you! I shall be spending a lot of time researching on your website getting my Caldwell family lines correctly documented on my family Tree. My 6th great grandparents were James Ritchie (whose mother was Jeanne Caldwell) and Margaret Caldwell. 1st or 2nd cousins, so I get a little extra Caldwell DNA hopefully. Actually I did the Ancestry DNA thing and I have quite a few areas in Northern Ireland and in Scotland where my DNA shows up, including Ayr and Prestwick! I just found on your website my 12th great grandparents were William Caldwell and Elise Wallace. I was just telling my sister the other day that I bet we might be related to the famous William Wallace because of where the Caldwell\'s lived when they lived in Scotland. Sounding better now! I love the Caldwell\'s story, because it represents the dreams of freedom and freedom of Worship as I have discovered with practically all of my Ancestors that can be traced back across the pond. I am a proud recipient of true Patriot DNA. All of my DNA Ancestors were in America before 1800!

Trying to find information on family of origin and ancesters of Peggy Caldwell, who married George McGaham, aka McGaughan in Wayne County, Kentucky October 9, 1801. I am a descendant of this Peggy Caldwell & have been unable to trace this line.

I enjoyed your writings on the Caldwell Family Tree.

My mother was a Caldwell and I have traced her family back to a GGGGrandfather from AL/TN but stuck there for now. I found it very interesting that you mention the Norsemen. I have a hereditary hand disease (Dupuytren Contracture) that is referred to as the Vikings Disease. It is rare but pops up now and then in the family. We also have the occasional red head that pops up (My great grandfather, my younger sister, my granddaughter and my second cousin and her granddaughter. Family oral history has always said we had Scotch-Irish ancestors.

I am a direct descendant of Captain Alexander Caldwell, I (1710-1766) and Margaret Caldwell McGregor (1709-1791). Alexander came across from Ireland in the era of the potato famine and settled in the Dunbarton / Litchfield area of New Hampshire. My branch of the Caldwell\'s are from the northeastern Massachusetts area and I am currently residing in southern California.

I wonder if some of my great aunt\'s documentation would be helpful in getting some of the generations of descendants of Caldwell families that came to the colonies in the early days. Ruth Welch, documented for her memberships into the Daughters of the Revolutionary War several Caldwell marriages and issue from the marriages.

To Angela Bernard and Kelli Watkins - I am the author of the Henry III article within this website. To Kelli - Joseph was the great grandson of William and Joseph is a royal descendant per my article. To Angela - There were no Richards in the Scottish monarchy, there were Roberts - Robert the Bruce, Robert II (grandson of the Bruce) and Robert III followed by the James 1-6 with Mary Stuart in there being mother of James VI. Is Elizabeth Wallace, wife of William Caldwell, related to Sir William Wallace Lord Protector of Scotland (braveheart)? Yes! Recently confirmed by the royal genealogical society\'s of both Britain and Scotland, I have the names and dates of the ancestors, it fills a full page single line spaced, 13 generations. Sir William Wallace was not of any royal descent. The daughter of Sir William Wallace and Marion Bradfute (forget what you saw in the movie), Elizabeth, married Sir William Balliol, 2nd Laird of Hoprig of which both the Balliol\'s and Bruce\'s were of direct lineage to the earlier Kings of Scotland. BUT ALSO!!! In my article you will see our direct lineage to the FitzAlan\'s of England. The ancestors of the FitzAlans include an uncle that became the first Steward to Scotland under David I who then took the surname Stewart. Robert II and all subsequent monarchs of Scotland thru James VI are Stewart\'s and are our cousins, in fact the grandmother of Robert the Bruce on his mother\'s side was also a Stewart. Going back even further, thru our grandfather Henry III of England to Henry I (England), Henry I was married to Matilda of Scotland, daughter of Malcolm III and Saint Margaret of Scotland making these monarchs our grandparents thus firmly establishing our relationship to the Scottish monarchy including the Bruce\'s and Balliol\'s. In fact, Robert I, Robert II, James I, James II, James V and James VI (who became James I of England) are what I call double cousins; we are related to both their father and mother. If you go back far enough I believe you would eventually find a double kinship to James III and IV thru our French grandfather Louis VIII. As I stated in my article, thru our grandfather Henry III and grandmother Eleanor of Provence, and (although not in the article) our grandfather (and Uncle) Edward I and grandmother Eleanor of Castile, we have direct blood relationships (meaning grandparents, aunts and uncles) to more royals, Earls, Lords, Saints, Archbishops, and even a Pope (Callixtus II) than I could begin to list here, with a half dozen separate lines back to Charlemagne. Throw in cousins and the number would be in the thousands including Presidents Washington, Polk and Taylor, Winston Churchill, the Spencer\'s (which makes the future King of England William a double cousin), the Middleton\'s (making the third generation future King George a double cousin as well). We have a very unique heritage thru the Plantagenet, FitzAlan, Capet and DeBohun families. The English marriage intertwining is sad, the French is even worse. Start with my article on our relationship to Henry III and go from there, you can spend weeks on the internet reading about your ancestors and their place in history. My mother was a Caldwell (her father was James Robert-grandfathers on his side were Ollie Otis Caldwell-William Andrew-James Lawrence-a series of 3 named Thomas-captain John F-Joseph Alexander—Alexander “John” (1639)-John Caldwell (1603) etc...my question starts with this John of 1603. I found Elizabeth Mcdowall Wallace on his mother’s side & it may appear there could be some direct line to Richard II & IIi of Scotland and back to James of England. I’m not sure if you are still researching, but I can’t find any further info on Elizabeth McDowall Wallace which seems to be where some more interesting history begins. Do you have any further details on her (her parents etc.)? If I’m correct, her father & grandfathers were William Wallaces-who may have direct lineage to other royalty. Thank you!

My father arrived in America from Galston Scotland. His name was William Caldwell. He changed his name when he arrived to William Caldwell Sharpe. He arrived in the late 19th century. He eventually became an auditor for the United Mine Workers. He lived in Central Illinois, Decatur and Taylorville. He also lived in Iowa.

He married Janet Patterson Greene Wilson in America. She was born in Glascow.

I am a granddaughter of Mary Maxine Caldwell, who was the daughter of Lester Earl Caldwell, who was son of James Lennon Caldwell, who was son of John Caldwell Jr, who was the son of John Caldwell Sr, who was the son of Joseph Caldwell. I think Joseph was the son of William but I am not sure?(from Ireland)
They may have emigrated first to New Castle , Delaware but I can trace them with certainty from Pennsylvania, then Ohio and then to Iowa. The Caldwell farm in Lewisburg, Iowa was held in the family until last year. There is a Lewisburg cemetery on the corner of the farm where there are many Caldwells.

I also can confirm the Jesse James story that my grandmother shared. I wish I had remembered more detail but the gang stopped by the Lewisburg farm for some water or food and they were nice.(was the jist of it)

My maternal grandmother was Martha Jane Kyle Caldwell (1902 - 1986) born to Charles Caldwell (1860 - 1911) of Magherageeragh, Ireland, Co Tyrone and Martha Jane Kyle (1862 - 1946). They lived in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
