Rev. Alexander Caldwell -- First Deranged Caldwell MinisterAlexander Caldwell was the second son of the Rev. David Caldwell. He married Sarah "Sally" Davidson on October 9, 1794 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He served as the fourth minister of the Rocky River Presbyterian Church, Concord, North Carolina during 1793-1797. The church had both a white and African-American congregation. Rev. Caruthers states that Alexander Caldwell was considered the most talented one of the family. "His prospects of usefulness were very flattering, when he began to show symptoms of mental alienation. These increased gradually until a separation from his pastoral charge, and even from his family, became necessary." He died October 2, 1841 on his late father’s farm where he had been born. Alexander Caldwell was the third of David Caldwell’s children to suffer mental derangement.
