I enjoyed reading the Caldwell family history very much on your site. Well done, I must say. I surfed in looking for some history of my Pool(Pettypool)family of Fairfield, South Carolina. The Pool, Caldwell,Pannel, Grubbs and others moved together in group and settled in Pontotoc cty. Mississippi around 1840. Thanks for sharing your research with so many.

Signing on again after an absence of some years. I\'m always searching for those connected to my great-great grandfather, Robert H. Caldwell, (b. ca 1815 - d. 1876) of County Tyrone. He was a shoemaker and a Presbyterian who married Mary Moore. In the early 1840s, they emigrated to Ontario, Canada, eventually settling in Grey County. One of their daughters, Catherine, married Lyman Smith in Buffalo, where they raised a large family.

Their son, William Robert (b. Co Tyrone 1836 - d. 1883 Durham, Ontario) was my great-grandfather. He served in the 100th Regiment of Foot and was stationed on Malta. He married a Cashel Co. Tipperary woman, Margaret Burke/Birch in Ottawa, 1867. They had 2 sons and 5 daughters.

DNA testing has helped in my research. So far, the only revelation has been a connection to three of the descendants of John Caldwell Calhoun, U.S. Vice-President during pre-Civil War times. We have done the BigY test and are enrolled in the McCarthy South of Ireland group.

Happy researching to all!

Pat

I am trying to fill in the past of my great great grandfather, Matthew Caldwell who emigrated to Philadelphia with his family in 1839. I know he came over on the Caledonia and that he had lived before that in Ireland but I believe he was born in Renfrewshire, Scotland. Also, several members of his family had the middle name of Huston (including my grandmother) but I can\'t find any family connection to Hustons. Can anyone give me any information on this@f0

Hello,

Thank you so much for the thoughtful entries and stories. It helps with the myths and legends I was told as a child. We have many links to the revolutionary war, Whiskey Rebellion, War of 1812, Civil War, WW1, and WW2. I have finally had a breakthrough in the last year using DNA.com from Ancestry.com - where I can now trace my Caldwell genealogy beyond my 3rd Great-Grandfather...and actually have a link to one of the legendary three Caldwell Brothers of Ayrshire - Alexander Caldwell. My Caldwell history is mainly based in the Pittsburgh/Monongahela Valley Pennsylvania area. Though mixed in the American melting pot, my DNA results showed that I am about 75-80% western German/eastern French with 20% split between Irish, Scot, and English. In the last two generations we are now spread from Penn. to Colorado and California. Looking forward to more research and new findings about our Caldwell history.

Best Regards,

Josh Caldwell

My grandmother was Statira Eliza Caldwell Van Buren. Her father was Joseph Caldwell. Her grandfather was Paul Caldwell whose father was William Caldwell. I believe William was born around 1760. He was one of those first naturalized in 1781. Those of us attempting to learn more about the man and his family have been doing so for many, many years. We know he lived in the Johnstown - Ephratah - Palatine area of New York State. My DNA results from Ancestry claim that I am 41 % Irish. The only Irish ancestor I have definitely found is Jeremiah Hayes. I am wondering if William also contributed.

I\'ve enjoyed the site and was able to connect some dots in my genealogy as well! My previous research had hit a dead end with Joseph Caldwell in Pennsylvania. Now I\'ve been able to add some additional names going back to Ireland. It would be wonderful to trace those Caldwell\'s even farther back at some point in the future.
